Toko

A new Japanese-Australian restaurant photographed not as a place to eat, but as a way of thinking about ingredients.

APPROACH

Rather than resolve the tension at the heart of Toko, we built the work around it. The rigour makes the softness more considered. The softness makes the rigour more generous.

CONTEXT

Toko is a restaurant that lives in the in-between. Japanese rigour and Australian ease. A chef with a point of view, a kitchen that forages before it plates. Preparing to open a second location, they needed a brand system that could grow without flattening the tension that had made it loved — the delicate balance between discipline and hospitality.

THE PROCESS

Half the shoot was governed by the Japanese half of the kitchen — slow, precise, every plate composed like a sentence. The other half was Australian — long lunches, friends arriving with more tomatoes from down the road. The pictures are the conversation between them.

RESULTS

Toko opened to a three-month waitlist. The identity was featured in Monocle's food & drink edition and shortlisted for a TDC award.
